FOSS OTD (10/14): OpenOffice.org

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

The FOSS OTD for 10/14 is OpenOffice.org, a free, multiplatform, multilingual office suite. Capable of handling nearly all features of and file types used in more expensive software, such as Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org is a great option for many users. Because of some quirks in Office and the ease of using OpenOffice.org to edit multiple [...]

FOSS OTD: FeedReader

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

If you’re on here and understand that you are reading a blog, you are likely familiar with RSS and Atom technologies. RSS and Atom files (”feeds”) are each ways of syndicating content from a website. For example, this blog’s RSS feed contains headlines and short summaries of long posts, or the full content of short [...]

FOSS OTD (10/12): Gaim

Thursday, October 13th, 2005

Most of the people reading this page probably have an AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) screen name. A lot of you probably have AOL, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, MSN Messenger, and Jabber screen names. Keeping all those IM (Instant Messaging) clients logged in and up to date can be a real pain. Enter Gaim, today’s FOSS OTD. [...]

The Elephant Parade: Thoughts on the American Constitutional Society

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

I missed this meeting, but my friend William went to the ACS (American Constitutional Society) introductory meeting, last week, and posted some great thoughts on it.

FOSS OTD: Mozilla Firefox

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

Today’s pick is the wonderful Mozilla Firefox browser. More secure than Internet Explorer (IE), more flexible than IE or Netscape (NS), fast, reliable, and extensible, Firefox is my browser of choice.
A side note: if, due to a crash, you should ever find that Firefox fails to load your bookmarks, take the following steps:
(1) Don’t panic
(2) [...]

FOSS OTD: Memtest86

Monday, October 10th, 2005

“What?”, you ask? “FOSS OTD” = “Free / Open Source Software Of The Day.” I’m going to try this out, though it’s likely to be somewhat sporadic; I do, after all, have classes to pass!
Anyway, the selection for the day is Memtest86, a Stand-Alone Memory Diagnostic. Memtest86 will help you find memory problems (hopefully) before [...]

Poem of the Day: Ode to a Nightingale (John Keats)

Monday, October 10th, 2005

MY heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains

My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk,

Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains

One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk:

‘Tis not through envy of thy happy lot,
         5

But being too happy in thine happiness,

That thou, light-wingèd Dryad of the trees,

          In some melodious plot

Of beechen green, and shadows [...]

Religious Workers and Finances

Monday, October 10th, 2005

My friend Jana has proposed a very interesting question: when embarking on religious work (Christian, in this case), should a person’s own finances come into play? That is, should a person entering the pastorate, Christian missionary work, or some other religious occupation delve into his or her own savings before raising support? Should he or [...]

Holy Trinity Church

Monday, October 10th, 2005

I visited the Hyde Park location of Holy Trinity Church, today. I figured that any church holding services in a chapel at a synagogue has got to be interesting. I really liked it. It really made me think, and provided a lot of what I’m looking for in a church home.

Rice Football is… Not Doing so Well

Monday, October 10th, 2005

My alma mater is tied with Army for the longest NCAA football losing streak in the nation, at 10 games. Go Rice!
Sigh… Only 117 days until the baseball season opener…
