Second or Fifth?

Obama and others have, of course, been saying to any who will listen that a McCain presidency would be the equivalent of a Bush third term. I dispute that on the merits; neither man is perfect, but there are very big differences in their political views and attitudes. A more amusing rebuttal came to light, however, when McCain said that Obama is running for Carter’s second term. I like it; the political inexperience and misguided thinking on foreign policy make it not a terrible comparison. That said, I think there’s a better one.

I say Obama is running not for Carter’s second term, but for Franklin Roosevelt’s fifth (or unfinished fourth, if you prefer). The incompetence and economic cluelessness is there; both are incredibly heavy-handed tax-and-spend liberals; and neither has the foggiest idea how actually to lead, as opposed to say.

What say you? Obama: Carter’s second term, or FDR’s fifth?
