If there is a single game in this world which fires the imagination and the intellect, it is chess. Invented at least 1,400 years ago, the game of kings is still the king of games.

I can't claim to be a master of the game (in fact, I don't even have an ELO rating, anymore), but I do claim to enjoy it and play at least decently. Below are just a few of the useful links for anyone wishing to learn more about the game or even to get serious about it:

Fritz 8

Fritz 8 is the training partner of choice for grandmasters and beginners, alike. I have played against a lot of computer opponents, over the years, including all versions of the Chessmaster series. I can confidently say that Fritz is the best of the bunch.

Fritz has lots of playing levels and will even adjust its own strength in sparring mode (it's not just a calculating monster!). It's also great for analyzing your play and finding weaknesses. One of my favorite aspects of gameplay is the light-hearted trash talk Fritz hurls at me during games, all in a proper British accent. (Don't worry, you can turn that off.)

A must-have for any serious player.

Chessbase.com

Makers of Chessbase 9.0 (and the Chessbase Mega Package), the premier database program, as well as Fritz, Junior, and Hiarcs, the best computer opponents on the market. I practice against Fritz 8 - you can also use it to play human opponents on the net, free of charge.

USCF

The United States Chess Federation, the official chess body of the USA. Runs regular tournaments and ranks US players.

FIDE

The Federation Internationale Des Echecs, the official world body of chess players, though many professional players no longer view FIDE as the best solution for their needs...

If you want to meet me online for a game at playchess.com (using Fritz), contact me and we'll set up a game!
